Checks are the pattern that, to me, always signals fall has arrived. It’s a pattern that feels incredibly versatile because it shows up in so many different scales. A tiny gingham feels slightly preppy on a collared crop shirt and coordinating shorts, while an exaggerated plaid dress feels like a warm welcome to fall dressing and a return to routines.

Smaller checks act almost like texture, making an outfit feel sharper without taking over. The bolder versions have more of that back-to-fall energy that looks especially good with denim, flats, and a roomy tote. It’s familiar in the best way, but when the colors feel fresh and the proportions are right, it gives early fall dressing a little lift.
